What is the misinformation?

In a tweet from Irish journalist, Gemma O'Doherty, she shared an article from Technocracy News in which the author denounces social distancing practices and mask wearing, viewing it as useless and an infringement upon one's freedom and independence. Over the course of 6 days, this article was viewed by over 800,000 individuals, primarily from the United Kingdom and United States.

What's the truth?

Contrary to the article's conclusions regarding the ineffectiveness of face masks and social distancing, our data analysis and research team found that mask-wearing and social distancing are effective ways to reduce COVID-19 person-to-person transmissions.

Why does it matter?

Such spread of misinformation is dangerous. With COVID-19 cases on the rise around the world, such misinformation spread may encourage individuals to defy COVID-19 mitigation practices.

We connected and shared our work across various social media platforms in order to empower organizations and individuals to join us in our mission of fighting misinformation. In future campaigns, we hope to improve our outreach and connect with various influencers and organizations who will be able to help us hyper-target regions in which misinformation is spread.
